Hofbräuhaus Loses Its Exclusive Bock-Brewing Privilege

In 1818, the exclusive privilege that had reserved the brewing of Bock beer in Munich for the Hofbräuhaus came to an end. The court brewery had held this privilege since developing its own version of the strong beer associated with Einbeck in the early seventeenth century. Ending the privilege allowed other Munich breweries to produce Bock beer legally. This opened a formerly court-controlled specialty to broader commercial brewing and contributed to the expansion of Bock as a recognized Bavarian beer style during the nineteenth century.
