Elias Pichler Is Recruited from Einbeck to Munich

In 1612, Duke Maximilian I recruited the Einbeck brewer Elias Pichler to Munich to help the Hofbräuhaus reproduce the strong beer associated with Einbeck. Hofbräu München's historical account distinguishes his arrival from the first successful Einbeck-style brew in spring 1614, after two years of experimentation. The Hofbräuhaus was already selling beer to innkeepers and private customers by 1610, according to the Bavarian Brewers' Association, but its beer had not yet matched the Einbeck model. Pichler's recruitment therefore marks a transfer of brewing knowledge, while 1614 marks the subsequent brewing milestone associated with Munich's bock tradition.
