Sarajevo Brewery Supplies Water During the Siege of Sarajevo

During the Siege of Sarajevo, which began in 1992, the city’s public water system was repeatedly disrupted and access to safe drinking water became a daily struggle. Sarajevo Brewery possessed its own underground water source, originally used for brewing, and opened it to the population. Residents queued at the brewery to fill bottles and containers when ordinary household supplies were unavailable. The brewery became an essential piece of civilian infrastructure during the siege. Reaching and waiting at water sources exposed residents to shelling and sniper fire, and the brewery itself was repeatedly damaged. Its role demonstrated how brewing facilities and their independent water supplies could become humanitarian resources during an urban crisis, serving the survival of the surrounding community rather than normal beer production.
