Tough Love Begins as a Homebrewing Project
Tough Love began as a homebrewing project in Portugal in 2017. Its founders traced their interest in craft beer to a trip that year. After returning to Portugal, they sought out unfamiliar beer styles and met other enthusiasts, before learning to brew through courses, reading, and practical experiments. The early batches were made for personal consumption and ranged from 16 to 40 liters, depending on the style. This period of small-scale brewing provided the background to the later commercial project led by Vítor Fontes. Tough Love subsequently established a brewery in Esmoriz, near Porto, where its range included both lagers and contemporary craft styles.
