Traditional Broyhan Production Ends in Hannover

In 1919, production of Broyhan ended at the Hannover brewers’ guild’s communal brewery. The guild had established the brewhouse on Köbelingerstraße in the late eighteenth century, preserving a beer tradition that traced its origins to Cord Broyhan’s first brew in 1526. The closure of this documented production line marks the conventional endpoint of traditional Broyhan brewing in Hannover. By then, the once prominent top-fermented beer had lost its former position in a brewing market increasingly dominated by more durable bottom-fermented lager beers. Later revivals would therefore depend on historical research and reconstruction rather than an uninterrupted commercial brewing tradition.
