Hannover’s Brewers Establish the Brewers’ Guild

In 1546, Hannover’s brewers organized themselves in a guild. The association emerged within a brewing economy transformed by the success of Broyhan, the pale, top-fermented beer first produced in the city twenty years earlier. The guild brought together Hannover’s holders of brewing rights, although its formal recognition as an independent legal entity followed only in 1609. The year 1546 is also associated with the first Broyhan-Taler, a copper mark used in connection with brewing and beer control. Bearing a rooster motif, it became the enduring emblem of Hannover’s brewers’ guild and later of Gilde Brauerei. The guild and its symbol demonstrate how Broyhan developed from an individual brewer’s creation into an institutionally regulated part of Hannover’s urban economy.
