Hannover Recognizes the Brewers’ Guild as an Independent Legal Entity

Laws

In 1609, Hannover’s city council recognized the city’s brewers’ guild as an independent legal entity. The decision gave formal institutional status to the association that Hannover’s brewers had established in 1546 during the expansion of the city’s Broyhan trade. The recognized guild supervised the official rights and obligations of its members. Its authority placed access to brewing and compliance with the rules of the trade under collective oversight, illustrating how the success of Broyhan contributed to the development of a formally regulated brewing organization in Hannover.
