Anheuser-Busch Registers The Trademark “Budweiser”

In 1907, Anheuser-Busch registered the trademark “Budweiser” with the American trademark office. The registration intensified the conflict over the name, because breweries in Budweis, now České Budějovice, also claimed rights based on the city’s brewing tradition and the geographic meaning of the word Budweiser. The dispute became one of the longest-running trademark conflicts in beer history. Later arrangements and court decisions divided usage by territory: Anheuser-Busch retained strong rights in North America, while Budweiser Budvar held rights in many European markets. Budweiser Bürgerbräu, another Budweis brewery that had once exported beer under the Budweiser name, later became connected to Anheuser-Busch InBev when its parent company Samson was acquired in 2014.
