Anheuser-Busch Only Allowed To Use The Name “Budweiser” In North America

In 1917, the Budweiser name dispute was temporarily addressed by an agreement that allowed Anheuser-Busch to use the name “Budweiser” exclusively in North America. In return, Anheuser-Busch was supposed to source hops for this beer from the Bohemian city of Budweis, now České Budějovice. The agreement did not end the conflict. German-language accounts of the dispute note that Anheuser-Busch continued to use the Budweiser name but did not actually send Budweis hops to Missouri. The unresolved tension later developed into a long-running international trademark dispute between Anheuser-Busch and Budweiser Budvar, with rights to the Budweiser name divided differently across world markets.
