Gose Brewing Begins at Rittergut Döllnitz

In 1824, Johann Philipp Ledermann began brewing Gose at the brewery of Rittergut Döllnitz, a manor near Halle. Ledermann had come from Goslar and brought knowledge of the beer’s production to Döllnitz. The manor and its brewing rights had been acquired in 1812 by Johann Gottlieb Goedecke, who modernized the estate’s brewing operations. Rittergut Döllnitz subsequently became a major center of Gose production. During the second half of the nineteenth century, its brewery supplied numerous Gose taverns in Leipzig and Halle and increasingly displaced competing Gose from Anhalt. The development helped shift the beer’s commercial center away from its medieval home around Goslar toward the Leipzig-Halle region.
