Friedrich Wurzler Revives Gose in Leipzig

In 1949, Leipzig brewmaster Friedrich Wurzler resumed Gose production in a small brewery on Arthur-Hoffmann-Straße. Wurzler had previously worked at the Rittergut Döllnitz brewery, whose equipment had been dismantled after the Second World War. After obtaining permission to produce the beer, he brewed Gose according to the old Döllnitz recipe and supplied several remaining Gose taverns in Leipzig. Wurzler’s brewery was then the only producer preserving the style. Most of the taverns it supplied closed during the 1950s, leaving Hotel Fröhlich as Leipzig’s last Gose outlet. Nevertheless, Wurzler’s revival maintained a direct brewing connection between the former Döllnitz tradition and Leipzig until his brewery ceased production in 1966.
