Ohne Bedenken Reopens and Restores Gose to Leipzig

On May 13, 1986, Lothar Goldhahn reopened the restored Gosenschenke “Ohne Bedenken” in Leipzig. The historic Gose tavern had originally been established by Carl Cajeri in 1899, but Leipzig had been without locally available Gose since the closure of the Friedrich Wurzler brewery in 1966. Goldhahn arranged for Gose to be produced according to an older recipe at a wheat-beer brewery operated by the VEB Getränkekombinat Berlin in East Berlin. By returning both the beer and one of its best-known taverns to Leipzig, the reopening began the modern revival of the city’s Gose tradition two decades after commercial production had disappeared.
