Gose Production Ends Again in Leipzig

In 1966, the small Friedrich Wurzler brewery in Leipzig closed. Wurzler had revived Gose production in 1949 using knowledge and a recipe associated with the former Rittergut Döllnitz brewery. After Wurzler’s death, the brewery and its Gose tradition had been continued by his successor, but demand for the beer remained limited. The closure eliminated the last remaining producer of Gose and left Leipzig without the beer once again. This second interruption lasted for approximately twenty years, until Lothar Goldhahn arranged for Gose to be brewed in East Berlin and restored it to Leipzig with the reopening of the Gosenschenke “Ohne Bedenken” in 1986.
