Echter Zoigl vom Kommunbrauer Becomes a Registered Trademark

Laws

In 2005, “Echter Zoigl vom Kommunbrauer” became a registered word-and-image trademark in Germany. The label represented the Upper Palatinate's communal brewing tradition, in which wort is produced in a shared brewhouse and fermented at the individual brewer's home before the beer is served locally. The trademark later became central to the work of the Schutz-Gemeinschaft Echter Zoigl vom Kommunbrauer. The association's statutes identify the mark and set out a commitment to preserving historic communal brewhouses and Zoigl culture while opposing misleading claims about origin. Voting membership is tied to brewing in one of five communal brewhouses: Eslarn, Falkenberg, Mitterteich, Neuhaus, or Windischeschenbach.
