Zoigl Culture Enters Germany’s Intangible Cultural Heritage Inventory

In December 2018, Upper Palatinate Zoigl culture was added to Germany's Nationwide Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The recognition covered a living tradition of communal brewing and local beer serving, including the customs and social relationships surrounding it. The inventory identifies five communities that maintain this tradition: Neuhaus, Windischeschenbach, Falkenberg, Mitterteich, and Eslarn. Participants share responsibility for communal brewhouses and pass brewing knowledge between generations. Beer is served at scheduled times in household taverns known as Zoiglstuben, where the Zoigl star signals that serving is underway. These gatherings provide places for conversation and community life. Inclusion in the national inventory recognized this combination of practical knowledge and social custom; it was a German national designation under the framework of the UNESCO convention.
