Gose Is Documented in Goslar

In 1397, the council of Goslar sent a barrel of Gose beer to Gerhard vom Berge, the Bishop of Hildesheim. The gift thanked the bishop for mediating a legal dispute in the city’s favor and provides a documented medieval reference connecting Gose directly with Goslar. An earlier surviving document dated March 27, 1332, mentions Gose brewed at Ilsenburg Monastery in the Harz region. The 1397 Goslar record confirms the beer’s close association with the imperial city from which its name and later brewing tradition were derived. Gose subsequently spread beyond the Harz and developed into a distinct top-fermented, sour beer tradition.
