Köstritzer Schwarzbier Is Relaunched Nationwide
In September 1993, Köstritzer Schwarzbier was relaunched across Germany, coinciding with the brewery's 450th anniversary. The national introduction followed Bitburger's acquisition of the brewery in 1991 and modernization of its production facilities. The campaign brought a regional Thuringian specialty to a wider market during the transformation of eastern German brewing after reunification. By 1995, Köstritzer had become Germany's leading brand in the bottom-fermented dark-beer segment.
