Köstritzer Is Transferred to Public Ownership
In 1948, the Köstritzer brewery in Bad Köstritz, Thuringia, was transferred to public ownership following expropriation by the state of Thuringia. The brewery later operated in East Germany as VEB Köstritzer Schwarzbierbrauerei, a state-owned enterprise. From 1956 to 1976, Köstritzer exported beer to West Germany and Eastern Europe. Its Schwarzbier was an export product during the state-owned period, giving the Thuringian specialty a commercial presence beyond East Germany before its nationwide relaunch after reunification.
