Birth Of Joseph Groll

Joseph Groll was born in Vilshofen an der Donau, Bavaria, on August 21, 1813. He came from a brewing family: public regional sources describe him as the son of the brewer Josef Groll senior and Anna Groll, and note that he learned the brewing trade in his father’s brewery. Groll later became the Bavarian brewer hired by the Burghers’ Brewery in Pilsen, where he brewed the first pilsner in 1842. His birth therefore belongs to the personal prehistory of the pilsner storyline, linking Bavarian brewing knowledge, bottom fermentation, and the emergence of the world’s most influential pale lager style.
