The Burghers’ Brewery In Pilsen Is Founded

In 1842, the townspeople of Pilsen who held the privileged right to brew beer joined forces to found and build the Burghers’ Brewery. The brewery was created as a shared brewing project in Pilsen, Bohemia, after local beer had long been brewed separately by individual burghers with varying quality. The new brewery became the setting for the first batch of the beer later known as Pilsner Urquell, brewed by Josef Groll on October 5, 1842. The founding of the Burghers’ Brewery therefore created the institutional and technical starting point for the original pale lager from Pilsen and for the later global influence of pilsner-style beer.
