Brewing Is First Documented at the Site of U Fleků

In 1499, maltster Vít Skřemenec purchased a house in Prague’s New Town at the site later known as U Fleků. The surviving record of this transaction is the earliest known written reference to beer being brewed at the property. The brewery passed through several owners and did not yet bear the name U Fleků. Brewing was interrupted after the Battle of White Mountain, when the property became deserted, but resumed after 1637. The establishment received its lasting name after brewer Jakub Flekovský purchased it in 1762. Its long history makes U Fleků an important surviving example of Prague’s urban brewery and public-house culture.
