František Ondřej Poupě Establishes an Informal Brewing School in Brno

On June 18, 1798, František Ondřej Poupě became brewmaster of the municipal brewery in Brno. During his years there, brewers traveled to the city to learn from his methods, creating what historians have described as an informal brewing school. Poupě promoted a more systematic and scientific approach to brewing. He used instruments such as the thermometer and beer scale, emphasized careful measurement, and taught brewing as a body of knowledge that could be explained and reproduced rather than guarded as a collection of trade secrets. His teaching in Brno helped establish professional brewing education in the Czech lands and influenced the broader development of modern Central European brewing.
