The Smíchov Brewery Is Established in Prague

On September 6, 1869, a joint-stock company was formed to establish a new brewery in Smíchov, then a rapidly industrializing suburb of Prague. Construction plans were completed the following month, and work began on a modern brewery designed for large-scale lager production. The first ceremonial batch was brewed on May 1, 1871, and the beer went on sale that July. The brewery later adopted Staropramen as its best-known brand, registering the name in 1911. Its growth helped make Smíchov one of Prague’s principal brewing districts and connected the city’s beer culture to the expansion of industrial pale lager brewing across the Czech lands.
