BrewDog Launches Equity for Punks
In 2009, BrewDog launched Equity for Punks, an equity-crowdfunding program through which members of the public could buy shares in the Scottish brewery. Rather than relying exclusively on banks or conventional institutional investors, BrewDog invited its customers and supporters to become direct shareholders. More than 1,300 people invested during the first campaign. Equity for Punks became central to BrewDog’s expansion and helped connect the brewery’s financing, marketing, and customer community. BrewDog repeated the model through several further investment rounds, eventually attracting a large international body of small shareholders. The program became one of the beer industry’s most prominent experiments in consumer-backed business financing, while exposing participants to the risks associated with shares in a privately held company.
