La Trappe Starts Brewing At Koningshoeven Abbey

In 1884, the monks of Koningshoeven Abbey near Tilburg in the Netherlands began brewing beer. The brewery, later known through the La Trappe beer brand, was created on the abbey grounds to help support the monastery and its charitable work. The name La Trappe refers back to La Trappe Abbey in Normandy, France, where the Trappist reform began in the 17th century. Koningshoeven became the Dutch anchor of Trappist brewing: its beers are produced within the abbey setting under the Trappist tradition, and La Trappe later became one of the best-known Trappist beer names outside Belgium.
