Jopen Launches Hoppenbier in Haarlem

On November 11, 1994, Jopen introduced Hoppenbier in Haarlem, Netherlands. The beer was based on a Haarlem brewing ordinance from 1501 and was presented as the city prepared to celebrate the 750th anniversary of receiving city rights. The launch grew out of an initiative by the Stichting Haarlems Biergenootschap to revive Haarlem's brewing heritage. Hoppenbier marked the beginning of Jopen as a beer producer. After initially using other breweries' facilities, Jopen continued to develop and opened its own brewery, café, and restaurant in Haarlem's former Jacobskerk in 2010. The 1994 launch therefore connected a surviving municipal brewing record with a new Dutch craft-beer business.
