First Mention Of Einbeck Beer

Einbecker beer is first mentioned in written records in 1351. A later account in the Einbecker Morgenpost states that the oldest known reference to Einbecker beer appears in the Hansische Geschichtsblätter and records that the city of Hamburg paid two pounds of money for one cask of Einbecker beer. This early reference shows that beer from Einbeck was already moving beyond the town in the fourteenth century. Einbeck later became famous for strong export beer, and the brewing tradition of the city became closely connected to the later history of bock beer, whose name is generally understood as deriving from Einbeck through the Bavarian form “Ainpöckisch” or “Einpöckisch.”
