Sierra Nevada Introduces Bigfoot Barleywine

Styles

Sierra Nevada introduced Bigfoot Barleywine in Chico, California, in 1983. The beer paired the strength and substantial malt character of barley wine with pronounced hop bitterness, becoming a defining example of the American interpretation of the style. Bigfoot also developed a following as a beer for cellaring and comparing vintages. Its hop-forward character helped distinguish American barleywine from many English examples, while its suitability for aging connected it with the broader strong-ale tradition.
