Anchor Brewing First Brews Old Foghorn

Styles

Anchor Brewing first brewed Old Foghorn in San Francisco in 1975. Under Fritz Maytag, the brewery adapted the English barley wine tradition for an early American craft brewing audience, adding a strong ale to its expanding range. Old Foghorn became one of the pioneering American craft examples of barley wine. It brought the style into the same brewery revival that produced Anchor Porter and Liberty Ale, while representing a separate beer and a different strong-ale tradition.
