Christian Weber Establishes the Karlsberg Brewery in Homburg

In 1878, merchant Christian Weber acquired the insolvent Jacoby brewery in Homburg and established the business that became the Karlsberg Brewery. He renamed it Bayerische Bierbrauerei zum Karlsberg, referring to the nearby Karlsberg palace complex. At the time, Homburg and the surrounding Saarpfalz belonged to the Bavarian Palatinate rather than the modern state of Saarland. The brewery moved production to what became Karlsbergstraße in 1884 and expanded its markets across the Saar region and neighboring territories. Later generations of the Weber family continued to manage the company, preserving its status as an owner-led family brewery. Karlsberg subsequently developed from a regional brewery into one of Germany’s larger family-controlled brewing groups, while Homburg remained its principal brewing location.
