Introduction To Beer Filtration

On June 4, 1878, Lorenz Adalbert Enzinger registered the first beer filter with the German Imperial Patent Office. Enzinger, a Bavarian brewer and inventor who had moved to Worms, developed a sheet-filter system in which beer passed through paper filter leaves held between iron plates. The invention changed the appearance, stability, and transportability of beer. By removing yeast and haze-forming particles, filtration made beer clearer and more durable, which became especially important for the visual standard of bright lager and pilsner and for the long-distance distribution of industrial beer.
