Brewing Begins in Senožeče

In 1820, a brewery began operating in Senožeče, in what is now Slovenia. The business later became known as Adria. Brewing developed alongside the settlement’s inns and transport trade, and by the 1880s beer from Senožeče was being exported through the port of Trieste. The brewery grew into an industrial producer. A local historical account records output of 35,000 hectoliters in 1911, when its production could rival Laško and Union. The municipality’s commemoration of its brewing heritage also recalls supplies to Trieste and ocean liners. The history of Senožeče preserves a brewing tradition beyond the two better-known Slovenian brewery names.
