The Kosler Brewery Opens in Ljubljana

Breweries

In 1864, Ivan and Peter Kosler founded a family brewing business in Ljubljana, in what is now Slovenia. It began under the name Pivovarna Kosler and became the brewery known as Union. Ljubljana Tourism and Union’s own historical presentation both date the brewery’s beginnings to 1864. The Kosler business entered a city with an older brewing tradition. Ljubljana innkeepers had brewed and sold their own beer as early as the sixteenth century. Its foundation therefore marks the origins of the later Union brewery, rather than the beginning of beer production in Ljubljana.
