The First Cannstatter Volksfest Is Held

On September 28, 1818, the first Cannstatter Volksfest was held on the Cannstatter Wasen near Stuttgart. King Wilhelm I of Württemberg and Queen Katharina had supported the creation of an agricultural festival intended to encourage farmers and improve agriculture after years of poor harvests and food shortages. The one-day event featured horse races and prizes for achievements in livestock breeding. The festival gradually expanded beyond its agricultural origins to include entertainment, food, and public drinking. Over time, large beer tents and regional breweries became central to the event, transforming the Cannstatter Volksfest into one of Germany’s largest public beer festivals. Its history shows how an agricultural exhibition could evolve into a major form of communal beer culture while retaining ceremonial links to farming and the harvest.
