The European Brewery Convention Establishes Its Analysis Committee

In 1949, the European Brewery Convention established an Analysis Committee to coordinate brewing-analysis methods used in its participating countries. European breweries and laboratories often followed different procedures, making results difficult to compare across national borders. The committee sought agreement on common methods for evaluating malt, hops, wort, beer, and other brewing materials. Its work developed into Analytica EBC, a collection of standardized laboratory methods maintained through collaborative testing by brewing scientists and industry laboratories. Shared analytical procedures allowed breweries to compare results more reliably and strengthened quality control across Europe. The committee’s later work also produced widely used EBC measurements for properties including beer and wort color and turbidity.
