ASBC Standardizes Digital Density Measurement for Beer
In 1978, the American Society of Brewing Chemists’ Beer-2B method established digital density measurement as a standardized way to determine beer’s specific gravity. It brought an electronic laboratory technique into the shared analytical methods used by brewing laboratories, extending the much older practice of measuring wort and beer with hydrometers and pycnometers. A Canadian Grain Commission study published in 1979 compared digital measurements with pycnometry for malt extracts and beer and found excellent agreement. It reported greater precision and productivity and the possibility of automating sampling and recording. Digital measurement thus offered a practical route toward faster, more reproducible laboratory control of brewing materials and finished beer. The milestone is a beer-specific analytical standard, not the invention of the general density meter or an assertion that every brewery adopted it in 1978.
