The BJCP Defines Baltic Porter as a Separate Competition Style

The Beer Judge Certification Program’s 2004 style guidelines gave Baltic Porter its own numbered description, 12C, within the Porter category, alongside Brown Porter and Robust Porter. The document set out sensory characteristics, ingredients, strength ranges, and commercial examples for use in competitions and judge education. This classification gave judges a shared reference for a regional family of beers. It described a rich, smooth porter with restrained roast character and allowed both lager yeast and cold fermentation with ale yeast. The guidelines formalized a judging category for established beers; the Baltic porter name and the brewing traditions it grouped together predated this edition.
