Köstritz's Commercial Brewing Rights Are Documented

Breweries

In 1543, brewing and beer-selling rights in Köstritz, Thuringia, were documented in connection with Burkhard von Wolframsdorf. The town's history associates this record with the brewing tradition from which the Köstritzer brewery developed. The Counts Reuß took over the brewery in 1696 and operated it as a court brewery. The business subsequently became known for Köstritzer Schwarzbier, connecting the town's brewing history with central Germany's dark-beer tradition.
