Thomas Tyrell Founds TYRELL BrauKunstAtelier

In 2020, German brewmaster Thomas Tyrell founded TYRELL BrauKunstAtelier as a personal brewing project focused on strong, age-worthy beers designed to continue developing in the bottle. Tyrell brought decades of international brewing experience to the project, including his previous role as Director of Brewing Operations and brewmaster at Stone Brewing Berlin. Rather than building a conventional range of everyday beers, he conceived the BrauKunstAtelier around limited releases intended for cellaring, food pairing, and shared tasting. Tyrell brewed the first releases at the cooperative brewery of the Erste Bernauer Braugenossenschaft on the Gutshof Börnicke near Berlin, where he is himself a cooperative member and therefore one of the brewery's co-owners. The first 2020 beer menu comprised a strong interpretation of Berliner Weisse called Kaiserweisse, a barley wine, and a cocoa stout, bottled in 0.75-liter bottles and conceived as an aperitif, main-course accompaniment, and dessert beer. By specializing in beers meant to mature rather than be consumed as fresh as possible, the BrauKunstAtelier represented a distinctive direction within Germany's modern craft-beer movement.
