Schüttinger Opens Its Bremen Brewpub

In 1990, Schüttinger opened as a brewpub in Bremen’s old city. The business combined a restaurant with an on-site brewing operation, allowing guests to see beer being made. Its origins lay in restaurateur Hilko Otten’s decision to turn a building next to his existing Friesenhof restaurant into a brewery and dining venue. Schüttinger brewed for its own pub and the neighboring Friesenhof. Later reporting described its pale and dark beers as unfiltered, retaining their yeast, and documented brewing equipment within view of the guests. The opening established a small-scale, restaurant-centered brewing business in Bremen well before the city’s craft-brewery openings of the 2010s.
