Guinness Launches Its First National Advertising Campaign
In February 1929, Guinness launched its first official advertising campaign in the British national press. Created with the London advertising agency S. H. Benson, the campaign introduced the slogan “Guinness is Good for You,” including an advertisement published in the Daily Chronicle. After generations of relying largely on reputation and word of mouth, Guinness was now presented to consumers through coordinated mass advertising. The campaign marked the beginning of one of the most influential traditions in beer advertising. Its concise slogans and distinctive visual identity helped turn Guinness from a famous brewery product into a modern consumer brand. During the following decades, campaigns created through S. H. Benson—especially the humorous posters associated with artist John Gilroy—made Guinness advertising recognizable far beyond the brewery’s original markets.
