Fritz Maytag Is Born
Frederick Louis “Fritz” Maytag III was born on December 9, 1937, in Des Moines, Iowa. He was a member of the Maytag family and later became one of the central figures in the revival of American craft brewing. Maytag's beer-historical importance came from his purchase of Anchor Brewing Company in San Francisco in 1965. Under his ownership, Anchor helped revive traditional American brewing, and beers such as Anchor Steam and Liberty Ale influenced later generations of small brewers and the development of modern American hop-forward beer.
