Spalt’s Hop Seal Is First Documented

In 1538, a hop seal for Spalt in Franconia was documented for the first time. The seal officially confirmed the origin and quality of hops marketed under the Spalt name, helping buyers distinguish genuine Spalter hops from products of uncertain provenance. It is generally described as the earliest German hop seal and as an early form of regulated agricultural-origin protection. Spalt had already been documented as a hop-growing area in 1341. The later seal reflected the commercial reputation achieved by its hops and protected both growers and merchants against misrepresentation. Similar systems of certification eventually became central to German hop trading, in which officially defined growing districts, inspection, sealing, and documentation safeguarded geographical origin and quality.
