Invention Of Light Märzen Beer In Munich

In 1841, Spaten Brewery in Munich developed a modern pale Märzen beer under Gabriel Sedlmayr the Younger. The timing connected Munich brewing with the same technical moment in which Anton Dreher brought Vienna lager to market at Klein-Schwechat near Vienna. The parallel development was not accidental. Dreher and Sedlmayr had traveled together to study modern British brewing technology, including malting methods and brewing instruments, and both applied this knowledge to Central European bottom-fermented brewing. The Munich Märzen and Vienna lager developments became important early markers of the 19th-century lager revolution.
