The Malt Research Institute Coordinates American Barley Improvement

In 1938, the Malt Research Institute was established in Madison, Wisconsin, to coordinate evaluation of malting barley and support research serving growers, maltsters, and brewers. It funded work at the federal cereal-crops laboratory and helped build a precompetitive system for testing agronomic performance alongside malting and brewing quality. The institute was a predecessor of later national malting-barley organizations. Its formation institutionalized the idea that an adequate barley supply depended on cooperation among agriculture, public research, malting, and brewing rather than on brewery specifications alone.
