KeyKeg Introduces the One-Way Bag-in-Keg System

In 2012, the Dutch company Lightweight Containers introduced a new generation of KeyKeg featuring an inner beverage bag and double-wall PET construction. The beer remained sealed inside the flexible bag while compressed air or gas applied outside the bag forced it toward the tap without coming into direct contact with the beverage. The lightweight, one-way keg reduced the need for breweries to recover, clean, and return conventional stainless-steel kegs. This made it especially useful for small breweries exporting beer over long distances or supplying markets without established keg-return systems. KeyKeg became closely associated with international craft-beer distribution, although its reliance on largely single-use plastic also raised questions about waste, recycling, and the environmental trade-offs of one-way packaging.
