Westmalle Renovates Its Brewery

In 1991, Westmalle renovated its brewery, continuing a long pattern of technical modernization inside one of Belgium’s oldest Trappist brewing traditions. The renovation followed earlier major changes at Westmalle, including the construction of a new brewery in 1933 and the development of the strong golden beer later known as Westmalle Tripel in 1934. Westmalle’s modern brewery combines updated equipment with a deliberately traditional brewing process. Later accounts of the brewery emphasize this balance between innovation and continuity: Westmalle uses modern techniques, but its brewing remains closely tied to sensory control, established recipes, and the monastic framework that defines Trappist beer.
