Bruges Brewers Arrange a Chapel Dedicated to St. Arnold

Community

On January 6, 1395, the brewers’ guild of Bruges reached an agreement with the Carmelites for religious services in a chapel within their monastery church on the Carmersstraat. The chapel was dedicated to St. Arnold. A later document from 1461 records an altar and the brewers’ devotion to Arnold of Soissons, also known as Arnold of Tiegem, the eleventh-century bishop associated with Oudenburg. Arnold’s place in brewing culture grew through guild worship, pilgrimage, and religious imagery. Legends credited him with miraculous beer and healing during an epidemic. Those stories belong to his devotional tradition. Brewing tools became recognizable attributes of his patronage: the nineteenth-century altar in the St. Arnold chapel at Tiegem includes a stirring fork representing the brewers’ patron saint.
