Brahma and Antarctica’s Controlling Shareholders Form AmBev

Breweries

On July 1, 1999, the controlling shareholders of Brazil’s Brahma and Antarctica contributed their stakes to AmBev, a holding company joining two major brewing businesses. Further exchanges of minority shares and Brazilian competition approval followed during 1999–2000. The initial combination should therefore be distinguished from the later completion of its corporate and regulatory steps. The transaction brought together longstanding Brazilian brands, breweries, and distribution businesses within a group operating across South America. AmBev subsequently expanded its regional position through its combination with Quinsa, associated with Quilmes, in 2003. This consolidation made Latin American brewing central to the next stage of global industry restructuring: AmBev combined with Belgium’s Interbrew to create InBev in 2004. The Brazilian group was a formative participant in that international expansion, not simply a collection of brands acquired after AB InBev already existed.
