Sander Hansen Develops an Automated Tunnel Pasteurizer
In 1937, Danish equipment manufacturer Sander Hansen developed an automated tunnel pasteurizer, according to its company chronology. The milestone belongs to the mechanization of packaged-beer production: sealed containers could move continuously through controlled heating and cooling stages instead of being handled in separate batches. Tunnel pasteurization treats beer after packaging, helping control spoilage organisms in both the beer and the filled container. Its integration into bottling, and later canning, lines supported high-throughput production and longer distribution chains. Subsequent developments improved heat recovery and temperature control. This industrial application extended the earlier science of pasteurization; it did not originate that science or establish that Sander Hansen invented every form of continuous beer pasteurization.
